About the Net Worth Calculator

Net worth is one of the simplest and most useful measures of overall financial progress. It is the difference between everything you own (your assets) and everything you owe (your liabilities). Tracking net worth over time tells you whether your overall picture is improving — even in years when investment markets move sideways.

How net worth is calculated

The formula is straightforward: Net Worth = Total Assets − Total Liabilities. This calculator adds up the values you enter for cash, investments, retirement accounts, real estate, vehicles, business interests, and other assets, then subtracts the outstanding balances on mortgages, credit cards, student loans, auto loans, and other debts. The result updates live as you type.

What counts as an asset?

  • Cash and savings — checking, savings, money market accounts, CDs.
  • Investment accounts — taxable brokerage accounts holding stocks, bonds, ETFs, or mutual funds.
  • Retirement accounts — 401(k), 403(b), Traditional IRA, Roth IRA, SEP-IRA, pension lump sums.
  • Real estate — current market value of your home and any rental or investment property.
  • Personal property — vehicles, valuable collectibles, jewelry (use realistic resale value).
  • Business interests — ownership stakes in privately held companies or partnerships.

What counts as a liability?

  • Mortgages — outstanding balances on your home and any other property.
  • HELOC & home equity loans — current draw, not the credit line.
  • Credit cards — full statement balances, not just the minimum payment.
  • Student loans — federal and private balances.
  • Auto loans — remaining balance on each financed vehicle.
  • Personal & other loans — family loans, business loans, tax debt.

Why track your net worth?

Income and account balances change from month to month. Net worth is the longer-term scoreboard. Updating it once or twice a year tells you whether you are gaining ground (positive trend), holding steady, or losing ground. It is a more meaningful long-term measure than any single account balance, and it often clarifies decisions about saving, debt repayment, and large purchases.

Common pitfalls to avoid

  • Overstating real estate. Use a realistic, conservative current market value — not what a home might sell for in a peak market.
  • Forgetting the mortgage. Home value is an asset; the loan against it is a liability. Many people only think about one side.
  • Ignoring small debts. Credit cards and personal loans compound quickly. Including them gives a realistic picture.
  • Overstating personal property. Vehicles depreciate; collectibles vary widely in resale value.

What this calculator does not include

  • Present value of defined-benefit pensions and lifetime Social Security benefits
  • Cash value of permanent life insurance
  • Contingent liabilities (cosigned debts, lawsuits, guarantees)
  • Future tax owed on tax-deferred retirement balances (a Roth dollar is worth more than a Traditional IRA dollar of equal balance)
