About the Retirement Savings Goal Calculator
This calculator estimates two things: how much money you may need at retirement to support a target level of inflation-adjusted spending, and how much to save each month between now and retirement to get there.
How the math works
The target nest egg uses a real-return present-value calculation. Your desired annual income in today’s dollars is inflated to the year you retire, then discounted across all years of retirement using the real return rate (expected return minus inflation). The monthly savings figure solves the standard annuity formula.
What this calculator does not model
- Social Security, pensions, or other guaranteed income
- Taxes on withdrawals from tax-deferred accounts
- Market volatility and sequence-of-returns risk
- Healthcare costs and long-term care
