About the College Savings Calculator
This calculator estimates the full inflation-adjusted cost of an undergraduate degree and the monthly savings required to fund it. College costs have historically risen faster than general inflation.
What the 529 plan adds
A 529 plan is a state-sponsored education savings account. Contributions grow tax-deferred, and qualified withdrawals for tuition, fees, room and board, books, and required supplies are tax-free. Many states also offer a state income tax deduction or credit on contributions.
What this calculator does not include
- Scholarships, grants, work-study, or federal student aid
- State tax benefits of contributing to a 529 plan
- Differences between in-state, out-of-state, and private school costs
- Graduate school costs
